Congrats, Utahans. You apparently live in the best state in the nation, at least according to a new ranking released by U.S. News & World Report on Tuesday. Those in Louisiana, however, are not so lucky.
Utah, the Beehive State, earned the top spot with high marks for fiscal stability, infrastructure, education, the economy and low crime. The top 5 also included South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska.
Louisiana landed dead last on the publication’s overall state-by-state ranking, which is based on scores across 71 metrics. The categories given the highest weight are education and health care.
Louisiana was not only last overall, but also last for “crime and corrections.” It ranked second-to-last for economy and natural environment, as well. Mississippi ranked last for health care and New Mexico was worst for education.
California, the nation’s most populous state, ranked 35th on the list, with middling marks for financial stability, crime, education and the economy. It was 50th for opportunity, but 7th for health care.

Utah is among the fastest-growing states in the country, according to Census data. New Mexico, which ranked as the fourth worst state in the U.S., actually saw its population shrink slightly in 2025.
